NATHE CM Bar Snaffle with Tongue Port – Innovation for Sensitive Horses
Choosing the right bit is crucial for your horse's well-being and willingness to perform. With the new NATHE CM bar snaffle with tongue port, SPRENGER presents an innovative solution that combines exceptional flexibility with maximum stability and safety.Especially for sensitive horses and horses with fleshy, thick tongues, this bit offers maximum comfort and optimal adaptation to the individual anatomy of the horse's mouth.
What makes the NATHE CM bar bit so special?
The NATHE CM straight bar bit stands out from conventional straight bar bits due to its sophisticated design. The forward-sloping port creates ample space for the tongue and fits precisely between the tongue and palate. This anatomically optimized shape allows the bit to perfectly adapt to the natural position of the tongue and avoid pressure points on the sensitive palate.
The angled transitions to the cheekpiece taper towards the center, further relieving pressure on the bars and edges of the tongue. This special design makes all the difference compared to classic straight bar bits, which exert uniform pressure across the entire width of the tongue. With the CM bit, pressure on the sensitive edges of the tongue is effectively avoided. The result: your horse accepts the bit readily, and your aids are soft yet precise.

For which horses is the NATHE CM bar bit suitable?
The NATHE CM bar bit has been specially developed for horses that place particular demands on their bit. It is the ideal choice for:
- Horses with fleshy, thick tongues that require more space in the mouth
- Sensitive horses with sensitive mouths that react sensitively to pressure
- Horses that avoid pressure on the tongue by pulling it up or sticking it out
- Horses that feel uncomfortable with conventional bits or show defensive reactions
Since tongue thickness in horses' mouths can vary greatly in modern horse breeding, but also produces particularly thick tongues that leave little room for a bit, tongue freedom is becoming increasingly relevant. The high, wide, and forward-sloping tongue freedom of CM bits relieves pressure on the center of the tongue, making the bit appealing even for horses that find pressure on the center of the tongue uncomfortable.
Hard or soft? The right choice for your horse
A particular highlight of the NATHE CM bar bit series is that it is available in two different degrees of hardness. This flexibility allows you to tailor the bit perfectly to your horse's individual needs.
The hard version – for precise assistance
The NATHE CM hard bar bit enables direct and precise transmission of rein aids.
It is particularly suitable for:
- Horses that occasionally pull strongly against the hand
- Advanced riders who seek clear and immediate communication with their horse
- Use as a curb bit, as only the hard version is competition-compliant
The faster transmission of rein aids ensures clear communication between rider and horse without compromising mouth comfort.
The soft version – for maximum sensitivity
The innovative softer, flexible version, the NATHE CM soft bar bit yields under increased pressure and allows for even finer control of the aids.
It is ideal for:
- Particularly sensitive horses and horses with sensitive mouths
- Horses in training
- Horses that tend to react defensively when subjected to overly direct pressure
Thanks to the integrated steel core, the soft version remains flexible while offering impressive stability and durability.
Safety through steel core – innovation meets stability
A key feature of all NATHE CM straight bar bits is the integrated steel core made of high-quality stainless steel. This ensures:
• Maximum stability with flexibility: Despite the steel core, the soft version of the bit remains pleasantly flexible and adapts to the horse's mouth movements, while the steel core provides the necessary stability.
• Safety: A continuous connection prevents the bit from being bitten through.
• Durability: The combination of high-quality thermoplastic and a steel core ensures a long lifespan.
The steel core is a crucial safety factor that distinguishes NATHE bits from other plastic bits. While the high-quality thermoplastic material ensures a comfortable mouth position, the steel core guarantees that the bit will not break, even with strong horses or intensive use.Another special feature: The steel core in all NATHE straight bar bits runs the entire length of the bit. While other manufacturers only screw the cheekpieces to the mouthpiece, the NATHE straight bar features a continuous steel core encased in thermoplastic.

Versatile side panels for every application
The NATHE CM bar bit with tongue relief is available in various versions with different side pieces. This variety allows you to find the perfect bit for your specific needs and those of your four-legged partner.
NATHE CM Loose Ring Snaffle Bit
The classic loose ring snaffle offers some freedom of movement in the horse's mouth. The movable rings allow the mouthpiece to move up and down, thus adapting to the horse's mouth movements and making it ideal for horses that prefer a more flexible bit or are occasionally a little restless in the mouth. The loose ring snaffle is also a better choice than fixed cheekpieces for riders with unsteady hands.
NATHE CM D-Ring Bar Snaffle Bit
The D-ring bar snaffle bit sits particularly quietly in the horse's mouth and prevents it from slipping sideways. The fixed side pieces provide lateral support, which is helpful when riding turns. This style is especially suitable for horses that tend to drift out over their outside shoulder. At the same time, the D-rings protect the sensitive corners of the mouth.
NATHE CM 3-Ring Bar Snaffle Bit
The 3-ring bar snaffle bit offers four different fastening options for varying degrees of leverage on the poll. Depending on the fastening, it exerts different levels of pressure on the tongue, poll, and lower jaw. It is particularly suitable for:
• Horses with a strong forward impulsion
• Horses that resist the aids and become strong
• Horses that are difficult to control. Due to the varying effects, this bit is especially recommended for riders with sensitive hands. Whether one or two pairs of reins are used can be decided individually depending on the horse. A suitable chin strap can also be used.
NATHE CM Pelham
The NATHE CM Pelham allows for very direct aids that act on the tongue, poll, and lower jaw. The leverage on the poll can be varied depending on how it is adjusted. The Pelham is often used in combination with Pelham straps. For more advanced riders and horses, the use of two pairs of reins is recommended to allow for more controlled application of the leverage. The curb chain is included and should be adjusted so that an angle of up to 45° is possible between the curb chain and the corner of the mouth to effectively limit the leverage on the poll.
NATHE CM Double Bridle
The NATHE CM double bridle with long shanks is only available in the hard version, as this is the only one that meets competition standards. It acts on the tongue, poll, and lower jaw. The poll pressure is higher due to the longer lever arm, and the effect is slightly delayed compared to shorter shanks. The curb chain is included and should allow a maximum angle of 45° between the shanks and the corners of the mouth.
Important note on choosing the right size:
Where the curb bit is buckled, the horse's mouth tends to be slightly narrower. We therefore recommend choosing a curb bit that is ½ to 1 cm smaller than the bradoon. The cheekpieces of the curb bit should fit snugly against the corners of the mouth to prevent blockage or twisting. You can find more information on proper fitting in the article: "Fitting the Curb Bit Correctly."
NATHE Thermoplastic – Material Benefits for Your Horse: The high-quality thermoplastic material of NATHE bits offers numerous advantages that sustainably promote your horse's well-being:
Smooth surface without the "eraser effect"
The smooth surface of the NATHE material prevents the so-called "eraser effect," which can occur with inferior plastic or rubber bits. This effect arises when rough surfaces irritate the sensitive mucous membranes of the mouth, especially if the horse does not salivate sufficiently. The smooth NATHE thermoplastic glides gently in the mouth and protects the mucous membranes.
Temperature-neutral and cold-flexible: A particular advantage of the NATHE material is its excellent cold flexibility. Even at low temperatures, the bit remains comfortable for the horse and does not become brittle or uncomfortably cold. This is especially beneficial for your horse in winter.
Excellent biocompatibility: NATHE bits are food-safe and free of plasticizers and solvents. Their excellent biocompatibility makes them the ideal choice for horses with allergies or intolerances to metals.
Dimensionally stable and mechanically strong: Despite its pleasant feel, the NATHE thermoplastic boasts high mechanical strength and dimensional stability. Combined with the steel core, this results in a bit that meets the highest standards.
Special adaptation of the CM bar bits: A particular advantage of the NATHE CM bar bit is its ability to adapt to different movements:
When jumping: When the horse raises its head and presses its tongue against the bit from below, the forward-sloping port provides ample space. The horse can move freely without being restricted by the bit.
In dressage work:
When the horse is in front of the vertical during dressage work, the bit adapts optimally to the anatomy of the horse's mouth. Its slightly forward-leaning shape follows the natural position of the tongue and avoids pressure on the sensitive palate.
Made in Germany – Quality from SPRENGER
All NATHE bits are manufactured in Germany and are subject to the strictest quality controls. The rings, side pieces, and steel core are made of high-quality stainless steel. This combination of German quality standards and innovative materials research makes NATHE bits a reliable partner for discerning riders.
Important information on use
Please note that NATHE bits are not guaranteed to be free of bite marks or tooth marks. Thermoplastic is softer than SENSOGAN, for example, and therefore much more susceptible to bite marks. This does not mean that the bit loses stability or safety; the integrated steel core ensures that the bit remains safe even with visible tooth marks. Nevertheless, contact with the horse's teeth should be avoided, and as soon as sharp-edged tooth marks are found on the surface, the bit should of course be replaced.
