You want to learn more about how you and your dog can get through the dark safely. Then take a look at our blog post: Safety for dogs in the dark!

What are reflective patches for dogs?
Reflective patches for dogs are pieces of fabric that consist of reflective material on one side. They throw light sources that fall on them, for example, car headlights or bicycle lamps, directly back and thus increase visibility from what they are attached to. Generally, there are several ways to attach them. On dog equipment, they are usually either already sewn on or can be attached to or around dog equipment using velcro fasteners.
With reflective patches for dogs you should ensure that they have a firm and secure hold, even during movement and reflect on all sides after being attached, in case they twist around the leash or the strap of the dog harness, for example.
So what is the purpose of a reflector? A reflector makes something more visible by reflecting light back towards its source.

What dog gear with reflectors for visibility in the dark is available?
In addition to separate reflective patches many dog products already come with reflective elements. These include, for example:
- Dog harnesses with reflective piping
- Dog collars with reflective piping
- Dog collars with woven-in reflective stripe
- Dog leashes with woven-in reflective stripe
- Dog coats or dog jackets with reflective elements
However, there are some popular materials for dog products where integrated reflective elements are often hard to find. This includes, for example, BioThane dog leashes and BioThane collars, leather dog leashes and leather dog collars, or most chain collars – in those cases, retrofitting with reflective patches is worthwhile.

- The wide velcro fastener for a secure hold and easy attachment.
- The circumferential reflective surface for optimal visibility in the dark, even if something slips!

For whom are reflective patches particularly suitable?
Reflective patches are basically suitable for everyone – even non-dog owners!
They are a practical way to make yourself or your dog more visible. However, there are certain groups of dog owners who particularly benefit from adding reflective patches to their dog's gear.
These dog owners especially benefit from reflective patches:
- Dog owners with black dogs or dogs with dark fur – These dogs are less visible in twilight and darkness due to their coat color than dogs with light-colored coats.
- Dog owners who work shifts - Those who frequently take walks early in the morning or late in the evening due to their work schedule often struggle with darkness, even in summer. Reflective patches can be a useful addition in these situations, all year round.
- Dog owners who live in rural areas - Street lighting is often lacking here, and other road users may not expect pedestrians. Reflective patches can increase visibility by utilizing the light emitted by other road users.
- Dog owners with older or sick dogs - These dogs may have a slower reaction time and move more slowly or unpredictably. Reflective patches can make these dogs visible at an early stage.
- Owners of city dogs - Especially in cities, there is often higher traffic volume, complex traffic situations, and with house dogs, you sometimes need to go out spontaneously at any time of day. Reflective patches offer a reliable, constant way to make yourself visible – without having to worry about charging them.
- Dog owners with active dogs - Whether you go jogging with your dog or let them play search games on walks to tire them out, if you and your dog might be active in the dark, you should ensure maximum visibility, also for the safety of other road users.

How do you use a reflector?
Using reflectors or reflective patches for dogs is super simple:
Unpack, attach, done!
Reflectors have a major advantage over light-up collars or flashing pendants for increased visibility: They never need to be charged and can therefore remain permanently attached. Reflective patches, on the other hand, use ambient light, such as from car headlights or bicycle lights, and reflect it back to make you and your dog visible. Accordingly, when using reflective patches, it is only necessary to ensure that the material is always clearly visible. Whether you want to attach the reflective patches to the dog collar, dog harness, dog leash, to yourself or somewhere else entirely is up to you.

Optimal placement of reflective patches
When trying to optimally place reflective patches for maximum visibility, you should keep an all-around view. That means you should make sure that there is a reflector on each side of your dog. That's exactly why our reflectors come in a practical pack of two!
Additionally, reflective patches should always be attached in such a way that they are not obscured. This applies even when the dog is moving. Therefore, especially if your dog is wearing a coat, for example, the reflective patches should be attached to the outermost layer of clothing or to the harness over the coat.
Ideally, reflective patches should be applied to various parts of the dog or on the leash or on yourself – Here, the rule is: More is better!
Do you want to make yourself and your dog visible in road traffic? In this case it is advisable to place them at eye level for cyclists or drivers, this way they can see the reflectors even earlier.
Reflective Patches FAQ
You have even more questions about our reflective patches? Here you'll find answers to some frequently asked questions!
Your question is not listed? No problem, feel free to contact us anytime via the shop or on social media.
Question: How long do reflective patches last?
Answer: Since reflective patches do not have a battery that can fail or need to be recharged, reflector patches have a very long lifespan. Proper handling is a must to avoid damaging the reflective surface. You should clean the reflective patches regularly to maintain maximum reflectivity on the surface.
Question: Do reflective patches also work in the rain?
Answer: Yes, reflective patches also work in the rain. Depending on the reflector, the water either beads off the surface or passes through the material without significantly affecting the reflective effect.
Question: Can I attach reflective patches myself?
Answer: Yes, our reflective patches have a wide Velcro closure, making it easy to attach them to your gear or your dog's gear and they can also be easily repositioned at any time.
Question: Are reflective patches suitable for all dog breeds?
Answer: Yes, reflective patches are generally suitable for all dog breeds. For dogs with particularly long or thick fur, you should ensure that the fur doesn't obscure the reflector when the dog is moving. If the reflector is completely or partially obscured, it cannot function as intended. Therefore, it is best to test the positioning of the reflective patch in the dark before its first use!
