What is Biothane?
Biothane is a leather-like polyester fabric that is coated with TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride), giving it special material properties that make it perfect for a wide range of applications.
Original Biothane® has been manufactured by the company of the same name in Ohio, USA, since 1977.
Why Biothane leashes?
Biothane has material properties that make it perfect for dog leashes and collars:
Biothane is very tear-resistant, dirt-resistant and easy to clean - while even being antibacterial, mold-resistant and UV-resistant.
It feels similar to leather for dogs and humans, is supple and flexible and has a good grip. Unlike leather, it is waterproof, does not soak up water and does not become stiff in the cold - perfect for all seasons!
The story behind Mailo & Friends by SPRENGER
Do you already know Mailo? You've probably come across the black miniature poodle a few times here in the shop or on our social media accounts.
As the dog of the Sprenger family, he is the namesake for our new brand "mailo & friends" by SPRENGER. We'll tell you how it all came about, what the idea behind the brand and the products is:
It all started with our 2 .0 mm chain collars. As a small dog, Mailo was unfortunately always too petite to wear the chain collars we produced ourselves at SPRENGER. We thought, that's not acceptable! After all, who would be a better brand ambassador and product tester than the Sprengers' family dog? What's more, we didn't just want Mailo to benefit from SPRENGER quality with a custom-made product, we also wanted to make the chain collars with all their advantages available to all small dogs - to suit their physique, i in other words delicate and light, yet durable, safe and long-lasting.
How this led us to our new brand mailo & friends and to leashes and collars made of Biothane® may not be so clear at first glance, but for us it was very quickly. Thanks to our new, small 2.0 mm chain collars, SPRENGER also became known to many people outside the world of dog sports. Mailo's big, heavy dog buddies, however, now had safe collars made of 4 mm or 5 mm stainless steel, but the matching leads were still missing. So our goal quickly became clear to us: SPRENGER quality for large and heavy breeds, not only for the chain collar, but also for the lead by using SPRENGER fittings. So we set out on a search: What materials are available that can keep up with our quality? Who can we work with?
The answer: Biothane®!
We were quickly convinced internally and started working on designs and prototypes, fine-tuning the collection and manufacturing and are now proud to present our new mailo & friends by SPRENGER Biothane® leashes and collars!
Psst - even with our new products we have not forgotten our roots in dog sports! For even better dog training, we now offer our Biothane® short lead.

Biothane short lead
Are you already a big fan of our 3-times adjustable SPRENGER leash made of nylon or the SPRENGER nylon leash with hand strap, but still don't want to do without our new biothane leashes? No problem!
We are now offering short leads for dogs for the first time!
These are made from the same high-quality Super Heavy Biothane® as our other new leashes and are the perfect tool for everyday use and training. The big advantage: thanks to the extra strong Biothane®, the short leads are also suitable for heavy breeds and strong dogs.
What is a short lead?
A short lead for dogs is a short dog leash that is 30 cm long. It is available with or without a loop. It is usually used for medium-sized to large dogs and is left permanently on the collar or harness during controlled free running, on walks or in training and dog sports (obedience) - either as the only leash or in addition to a longer leash.
The advantage of a short lead is that the dog can be led very close to you or, depending on the situation, the dog can be quickly grabbed short, for example when strange dogs come towards you on the walk, without having to shorten a leash, put it on or reach into the dog's collar/harness.

Biothane collar
To complete your Biothane look: Our new adjustable Biothane® collars are equipped with an assembly chain made of high-quality stainless steel from SPRENGER. This gives you and your dog even more flexibility and security and allows the collar to be put on and taken off without the need for a clasp. These collars are Adjustable Biothane collars with a pull-stop, as the assembly chain limits the tightening of the collar and prevents choking of the dog.
