Rowel spurs

It is easy to remember how the spurs exert their force:

For spurs without a wheel, the following applies: the sharper and narrower the prong or the tip of the shank, the more intense the pressure exerted. A narrow prong therefore ensures a sharper and more precise effect.

For spurs with a wheel, the effect depends on how thick the wheel is. The thicker the wheel, the gentler the effect on the horse. Wheels with serrations are significantly sharper in their effect than those with a smooth, round shape.

An important point: always ensure that the wheel can turn freely. A wheel that is stuck can cause injuries. You should be particularly careful during the horse’s moulting season, as hair and dirt can become trapped between the spur and the wheel. To prevent this, it is important to clean the comb spurs regularly, particularly around the wheel. This maintains their functionality and prevents unnecessary injuries.
