It is not possible to make a general statement as to whether a bar bit or a split bit is better, as this depends heavily on the horse, the intended use and the rider. With bar bits, working on the horse’s posture and suppleness, as well as giving one-sided rein aids, tends to be rather difficult – and with a flexible bar, it is virtually impossible. Riders who use a bar bit should therefore be able to control their horse effectively using leg and weight aids, and also steer it through turns.
